As I was sitting and recovering from my fever, you know I had nothing to do but play all the AR Rahman albums one after other.Been about 14 hours of continous music now! Soon I was transported into this lilting land of beauty the man created for us. I tend to associate each album to when it was rele
ased, get reminded of my life for example say when “Minsara Kanavu” was released I was in 11th standard and I bought the cassete after days of struggle to amass a princely sum of 45 rupees.
I was 12 when Roja first gently shook me awake and what an experience it was. I had listened to an odd medley of tamil film music, English pop music, bare minimum of hindi and well I did not really think much of music. The freshness “china china aasai” had was remarkable and no wonder he bagged the national award on his debut attempt. Instead of chronologically following his career which umpteen much more worthy and knowledgeable bloggers have done already I will just pick some excerpts. The writing is deliberately disjointed for this is definitely just excerpts!
He introduced great singers to us : Among many Hariharan ( ya he sang ghazals honestly), Sukhwindra singh, Sadhana Sargam, Suresh Peters, Harini , Shahul Hameed, Madhushree, Kailash Kher, Shankar Mahadevan ( I know this is a bit unfair)
Internationalized our film music.: A chill ran through me when for the very first time in MTV
Inspired music directors: Can’t stop laughing when Superhit muqabla had 3 version of muqabla from kadhalan all competing. Or when Anu malik said he composed music for Gentleman that rascal.
I often feel extremely bad when some of his real genius works never quite got its deserved approval. I can reel out a whole list of movies that has brilliant soul stirring music but only us “Rahmaniacs” have really listened to it enough to appreciate it.
Eg. 1947 earth, Iruvar, Vandicholai chinnarasu, Kangalal kaidu sei, Bose, Meenaxi, Uzhavan, Water and you could add to this list effortlessly.
I was thinking about my all time Rahman favourites and whittle down the list to just five is no mean task. But here are the 5 songs ( not ranked) that according to me among his best.
1. Kadhal Rojave(Roja)
2. Minnale ( May Madham)
3. Dil se re ( Dil se)
4.
5. Thenkizhakku cheemayile (Kizhakku cheemayile)
His non filmi ventures have been wonderful. OF course we remember some of his ads Asian paints, Regal and I think Leo coffee are some which stick out. Vandemataram took
hese “ pristine songs” can be reinvented honestly ARR has breathed life into them adding a whole new dimension to it.
Some movies I waited for but never saw the light of the day were “Engineer” – Arvind Swami + Madhuri , Ta rum pump um ( Shekhar Kapur) , Shikar ( Subash Ghai) . .
My least favourite ARR movies ( the tricky tricky part) are Parasuram, Udaya, Baba ( akin to suicide not liking this but well what can I do!!!).
Finally the thing that I most looking forward to is the third dimension tour when he performs here in New York sometime in March.
I have scouted around but I cant find when if any of you know please do drop a line I will be forever grateful
Finally thanks ARR for filling my life with music, the countless hours of that tingling feeling of pleasure . There is no two ways about it ARR rocks!

hi read ur views nice. but small correction sadhana sargam was introduced by vidyasagar in tamil, 8 years back as she was rarely heard in bollywood post 1995 and next maestro ilayaraja gave offers to sargam and ARR comes third to give hits like snehidhane & konjum mainakalae. but only from then on sargam was noticed widely in tamil and rest was history. this sargam herself told in an interview to tamil weekly. thanks pankaj
Navin,
Do you remember the day (I guess 9th or 10th) when bombay's music was released,we were imagining how Andha arabic kadaloram song will be in the movie??? Your blog suddenly reminded me of that....It has been 10 full years...OMG thats' longgg time back.ARR rocks..
Meera

No Way Sandana Saragam Intreduse By only one ARR in Minsara Kanavu
plz Anonymousses...
Sadhana was not introduced by the BOSS...
do u all think tat by introducing only he is famous...we must not blindly follow as evry thing is..
It is Vidhyasagar who did..
hey navin...chkout my blog article more thoroughly...u said i din't review water....infact, i've given my best comments to that album....i do consider it as one of the all time best of arr..
Hi, Read your views. ARR, I feel is not the best of musicians i would like to remember. Though I dont listen to much of Tamil songs my attarcation to ARR started when I saw Roja and then Thiruda Rhiruda and then Bombay. More recently I would say Boys but other than that not much. Music is soimething you should like the second u listen to it unfortunately for ARR u need to listen it over and over again to like it. And ARR is repetetive - The same beats, the same orchestra, the same rythym. I would rate Illayaraja at a much higher category than ARR. ARRs music flopped in Rang De Basanti. as for Anu Malik - yeah he does copy but then what do u have to say for Deva - A Legendary Copymaster who copies even from Anu Malik. Anu Malik does have his share of fans - what do u ahve to say for Bazigar which I guess is ur favourite Thanks to a Monkey called SRK who acted in the movie. Anu did have a wonderful music... Now u have new budding musicians who will rip ARR apart...
Dear Arvind K,
Illyayaaja is good no doubt but ARR is God. You have very lame excuses. New budding musicians my foot. ARR is the betst there is the best there was the best there ever will be!!!
ya do call me as you promised
i would much rather listen to his music than read one more piece about his greatness.. its almost like reading the 23639039438th article on sachin tendulkar's batting
but anyways, u r a friend, and i forgive you...
lmfao!!! the comments r more entertaining than the blog itself!
if illayraja is just 'good' then arr's nowhere close to god!
Simply, A R Rahman is the best in the modern Indian music... I was absolutly shocked to see how could Anu Malik say "he composed the music for the Gentleman"... Does anyone in bollywood has integrity.. f^&*ing co&* s$#kers losers. No wonder none of these guys has world recognition other than Rahman.
